CHICAGO
8:45 am-noon
Greater Chicago Food Depository
lunch following
For this year's project we are returning to the Chicago Greater Food
Depository. Check out the Food Depository at http://www.chicagosfoodbank.org.
Two years ago, more than 40 Chicago Area Wooster Alumni sorted and packed
over 4,000 pounds of food for the more than 600 Chicago-area food assistance
agencies by volunteering at the Depository. This year we are going to
break the 2002 totals - because we are going to be joined by the College's
best motivator and cheerleader - President Stan Hales.
The Scots-In-Service 2004 project will again involve inspecting, sorting, and
packaging food at the Food Depository in its new facilities. The day will start
at 8:45AM and will finish up at 12NOON. We will gather for a pizza lunch !
after the event at Home Run Inn located near the Food Depository.
The Depository asked that everyone be prompt. Warehouse doors close at 9AM
for orientation and instructions. Persons running late may be locked out during
the beginning tour and orientation.
Volunteers must wear long pants, sleeved shirts and closed! shoes with non-skid
soles. Sandals, shorts, and tank tops are not allowed. The Volunteer coordinator
from the Depository pleaded with me to remind people not to wear sandals or
they will not be able to work. Jeans, a T-shirt and athletic shoes are a good
outfit. Lockers are also provided for purses and other belongings.
The Greater Chicago Food Depository is located at 4100 W. Ann Lurie Place in
Chicago, just northwest of the intersection of Pulaski and Ann Lurie Place
(formerly 42nd Place), and is easily accessible from the Stevenson Expressway.
There is a parking lot directly in front of the Depository with plenty of parking.
Public Transit Instructions (CTA): To get to GCFD from the Loop take the Orange
Line South (toward Midway Airport) to the Pulaski stop. At Pulaski, transfer
to bus #53A (Pulaski) North to 42nd Place (Ann Lurie Place).
As a reminder, children must be older than 12 years of age to participate because
the warehouse is a factory environment with lots of heavy machinery and might
be dangerous for young children.
Thanks again for signing up and I look forward to seeing you on September 18th.
